To get better understanding of the interaction of flow fields induced by a propeller and a rudder in the wake of a ship hull, velocity measurements in the slipstream of a self-propelling tanker model with and without rudder are carried out in Nagasaki Experimental Tank. The control surfaces for measurements are 1.0D, 1.5D, 2.0D, 3.0D, 4.5D and 6.0D behind the propeller center, where D is propeller diameter. The result of measurements shows that the outer shape of the slipstream is elongated in vertical direction and the rotational velocity components are reduced by existence of a rudder. The center of rotational flow is shifted slightly toward the direction opposite to the free surface. The velocity field induced by the rudder in the slipstream is determined experimentally. A comparison is also made of the distribution of momentum loss measured 0.5L_<pp> (about 15D) behind a cargo ship model with and without rudder.
