非対称横揺の不安定性に関する一考察

Recently, several experiments have shown that, if initial angle exceeds the angle of deck edge immersion (θ_m), asymmetric free rolling occurs, both the mean inclination and amplitude being damped out with time, and that, with the same condition, forced rolling on waves, also, becomes asymmetirc, which sometimes continues for long time and other times falls into instability, resulting in capsizing. The present paper deals with the theoretical considerations on these phenomena. According to the author's view, asymmetric rolling takes place, when the resistance for negative angular velocity is greater than that for positive velocity, and among waves forced rolling becomes unstable, if the conditions of resistance is combined with the negative slope of stabiility curve at the angle which corresponds to the mean of the rolling. When neither of the two conditions is satisfied, the rolling will be stable. If the slope is zero (at the flat part of the stability curve), steady asymmetirc rolling continues for some while, after that the mean inclination decreases or increases, accordnig to the relation between θ_m and the excess of resistarce for negative velocity over that for positive velocity.
