Now in Japan, in determining the capacity of the windlass, the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) are complied with. For some ships built here, an owner have supplied electrically driven windlasses of the German made. The rated load and output of electric motors of these electrically driven windlasses are less than those of Japanese made windlasses. Therefore, we have re-examined as to the rated load and output of the electric motor of the electrically driven windlass. The following results are obtained by our investigatons. 1. If we take into considerations the condition of the windlasses encounted in actual services on board, it is sufficient to assunre as the rated load the force for hoisting two anchors and two shackles lengths of anchor chain in water at the same time. 2. The friction loss of power in hawse pipes is about 37%. 3. The mechanical efficiency of the electrically driven windlass is about 66%. 4. The total efficiency of the whole anchor hoisting equipment is about 48%. 5. From the above, the rated load and output of the electric motor of the electrically driven windlassess can be estimated as follows. Rated load=weight of 2 Anchors and 90m Chains×(6.85)/(7.85)×1.37 Output=((Rated load)×(Rated speed))/(4.5×0.66) where the units are taken as follows. Rated load-tons Rated speed-m/min. Output-PS
