On a mammoth tanker, there is often provided a wash bulkhead on the centre line in the hull srructure. In such a case there occures a considerable magnitude of shearing stress in the bulkhead at about 1/4 L from 〓, where the shearing force acting on thes hip reaches its maximum. If an opening is cut out at this part of bulkhead, it is supported that a high degree of stress concentration should occure around the circumference of the opening. Hence it is necessary to conssider a suitable reinforcement in order to release such a highly concentrated stress. There are two criterions when considering this reinforcement, the one is to make the largest strses smaller than the allowable stress and the other is to make the magnitude of energy absorbed till it falls into failure as large as possible, generally. Although many investigations have been made in regard to these reinforcements both theoretically and experimentally, few of these consider these two criterions. The authors therefone, tried to find the most effective reinforcement, taking into account the above two criterions. The authors analysed the stresses and shearing strain energy of the perforated plate with various shapes of reinforcement at the circumferences of the openings. The analysis was made both theoretically and experimentally, and the authors recommend, as the most effective method of reinforcement, to attach a coaming whose cross sectional area is 4/10〜5/10 that of opening which is cut out.
