Sino-Himalayan groups of the genus Euthalia are generally large imposing butterflies with the upperside ground colour dark green to olive green. Apart from the differences in facies, they are separable from the rest of the Euthalia species, which are mainly tropical in distribution, by the following characteristics in the male genitalia: (1) The height of the tegumen is usually markedly taller than that of the vinculum. (2) The saccus is relatively short. (3) The valva is strongly constricted from below. The Sino-Himalayan Euthalia species are here tentatively divided into two: i.e. the nara group and the patala group. The former is represented by the single species E. nara, the latter comprising the rest of the species. The nara group is separable from the patala group by the following characteristics: (1) Complete sexual dimorphism (2) Absence of distinct subapical whitish spots in spaces 6 and 8 of male forewing (3) Lack of sharp teeth around the distal end of the valva In the patala group, all the species so far examined have sharply toothed valvae, though they are rather variable in wing venation. The differences in the male genitalia are not always correlated with external differences. The larvae of this group probably feed on Quercus, Fagaceae, and the pupae so far known are rather slender diamond-shaped in dorsal view, being distinct from those of other groups. Four species of Sino-Himalayan Euthalia are illustrated with descriptions of main specific characters, notes on geographic variations and bionomics. Figures of male genitalia are also provided.
