As the population in Japan ages, it is predicted that by 2014 approximately one in fourpeople will be over 65. As a result, there will be a greater demand for more home helpers, welfare care workers, and nurses to cater to the needs of the elderly. Unfortunately, thissocial dilemma could lead to an increase of burnout among people who work in the field ofhealth care for the aged. The focus of this research and this paper is to illustrate the closerelationship between staff attributes and burnout, and the level of satisfaction towardwork. To demonstrate this, data came from eighty-eight surveys completed by employees atthree Health Care Facilities for the Elderly. Sixty-eight women and twenty men respondedand the average of the entire group was 37.1 years old. Nurses, care workers, helpers andpeople in other occupations, such as office workers and nutritionists participated. Thesurvey included two kinds of scales: One, a job satisfaction scale, created by Ozaki andTadamasa, which included six items: pay, occupational status, administration, autonomyas a specialist, work duties, and mutual influence. Second, a burnout scale which includedthree items: an emotional sense of exhaustion, depersonalization and an individual sense ofachievement. Before distributing the survey, respective administrators were told about theintentions of this research, and then to consider the privacy of each individual eachcompleted survey was placed in a separate envelope and then collected. The results showed that while each job is unique, there is a close connection between 1)burnout and the degree of job satisfaction according to one's status among all jobs; 2) ageand burnout from an emotional sense of exhaustion; and 3) burnout and the degree of jobsatisfaction of status in the workplace, which is seen among both males and females.Again, while each job has its own characteristics, it was discovered that when theoccupational status of the individual was raised, feelings of extreme fatigue and exhaustiondecreased and that person felt a sense of achievement. It is necessary to create an appropriate work environment according to each kind of jobso that workers who assist the elderly do not become burned out, so that they can raise thelevel of satisfaction toward their work, and so that they can have an opportunity to use thespecial skills that each of them possess.
