I attempt to shade off the line, drawn by Rorty, vividly demarcating the private and the public, viz., private irony and public justice, the simple distinction with which he redescribes the complicatedly entangled strands of liberalism, namely, the pursuit of the perfection of individual autonomy and that of the decrease of cruelty. He opens that dichotomy as he closes the metaphysical difference between apriori moral principles and morality which we are allegedly to attribute to them. He weaves ironism, which is of anti-metaphysics, of nominalism, and of historicism, into liberal hope that gives rise to human solidarity among various people with different final vocabularies, and vice versa, as if he were weaving two allegedly distinctive fabrics together into a quilt. Shading off the line, through it we can see the final vocabulary of the liberal utopia Rorty advocates. I describe that final vocabulary as the free self-redescription of both liberal societies and liberal ironists. I further contend that that final vocabulary is elaborately woven into those fabrics and that they are thus tailored to be the liberal utopia. To see it, I unweave the knitting of his ingenious texts. Then I clarify that the privatepublic split is thus never really split. I argue that Rorty rather weaves into social poeticizing his own ironism, which is to be privatized as a philosophical pursuit, with the hope that the poeticizing and redescribing of liberal societies will enlarge the scope of solidarity. Offering some discreet criticism though, I maintain that Rorty's private-public distinction however succeeds both in separating the public from the Platonist-Kantian sublime view that holds reality and justice in a single vision and in replacing it with a horizontal metaphor of patching miscellaneous final vocabularies on ethics.
