Enhancing "hometown"learning is promoted in the new Course of Study Guidelines issued by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Metaphorical use of a chocolate pastry may make it easier to understand the relationship between "hometowns" and "local areas". The inside chocolate filling in this metaphor would be a "hometown" and the outside pastry would be its "local area". Combining both will produce "local area learning". Promoting these "local area learning" lessons will foster a "hometown-caring attitude". High-level lesson planning and teaching material development skills are required to foster this "hometown-caring attitude". As highly trained professionals, teachers are expected to be "educational experts" who continuously improve their teaching skills.
