This Study aims at examining two points. The first aim is to clarify the meaning of the term"zest for living "(IKIRUCHIKARA) which is used in the "Report of the Central Council for Education"(1996). It is the author's belief that, despite the importance given this phrase in thecurrent course of study, it is in fact ambiguous. The second aim is to examine the relationship between the former term and"competence in listening"for teachers. The following results were uncovered. First, the"zest for living"in children involves not only practical meaning but also spiritual, or existential, meaning. If so, the term may be more carefully used for all children. Secondly, teacher's sensitive esponsiveness is an important base for fostering"zest for living"in children.
