Grammaticality judgement tests (GJTs) have been frequently used in second language (L2) acquisition research. However, questions arise as to the construct validity of GJTs as it is not always clear whether implicit or explicit knowledge is being measured. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether timed and untimed GJT can measure implicit and explicit knowledge of L2 learners, respectively. GJTs consisting of 80 sentences, evenly divided between grammatical and ungrammatical, were designed to provide measures of L2 learner's knowledge of 20 English grammatical structures. On the assumption that limited time to response may require them to rely on implicit knowledge, in contrast, unlimited time may allow them to access explicit knowledge, timed and untimed versions of GJTs were developed and administered to 81 Japanese lowproficiency university students. The results show that there were high correlations between the timed and untimed versions and low correlations between the grammatical and ungrammatical items. This results suggest that time pressure does not always contribute to measuring implicit and explicit knowledge separately, and that L2 learners may rely on different cognitive processes in approving well-formed sentences and in rejecting ill-formed sentences.
