To investigate the proper method of amino acids administration in totalparenteral nutrition (TPN), metabolism of amino acids was experimentally studied with radioactive tracer's experiments and nutritional status in liver and muscle. In various calory of different ratio of glucose and aminb acids, TPN in rats was performed for one week. Cumulative expired CO_2 after iv injection of amino acids showed that amino acids increased intheir utilization to CO_2 during TPN in either glucogenic or ketogenic amino acids and also that glucogenic amino acids were metabolized to CO_2 better than ketogenic amino acids. Cumulative expired CO_2 and % radioactivity in liver and muscle revealed that amino acids metabolism in TPN was affected mainly by the ratio of non protein calory over nitrogen content (Cal/N) in case of sufficient calory administered but was dependent on the administered calory in insufficient energy sources. Contents of water soluble proteins and creatine in muscle showed that amino acids in TPN of sufficient calory were well incorporated into the proteins in muscle. Glycogen contents in liver and muscle and Ml fraction in water soluble proteins revealed that 2g/Kg/day of amino acids with suitable Cal/N had the almost same in nutritional effect to 5g/kg/day of amino acids with unsuitable Cal/N. Thus, in amino acids administration proper ratio of Cal/N and sufficient calory above positive nitrogen balance were indispensable for good utilization of administered aminoacids in TPN.
