Running activities of rats, quantitatively recorded by a locomotor activity meter, were measured at 6℃, 25℃ and 32℃. Effects of deprivation of food and/ or water on the activities were examined in individual animals at each environmental temperature. Total amount of activities in a day was significantly higher under deprivation of food and/or water than that under supply of them at 6℃ and 32℃, but was not influenced at 25℃. Body weight losses were not correlated to the amount of activities in a day. Circadian thythm of activities was measured in a 12 h light and 12 h dark cycle (LD-cycle) at 25℃ during 3 days. Activities in the dark predominated over those in the light phase. These patterns were not changed under the feeding condition as a whole, but under the food and water deprived conditions the activities increased in the light phase. The onset of activities was associated with the start of the dark phase of the LD-cycle, and these activities were changed in pattern by the feeding or ambient temperature conditions. The importance of thermal as well as feeding conditions was discussed in relation to the circadian rhythm of running wheel activity.
