This paper is a practical report of Yamagata University's Japanese culture class conducted between the academic year of 2004/05 and 2007/08. The course has been developed as an experience-based culture learning program which can be taken by international students regardless of their level of proficiency in Japanese. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to understand aspects of Japanese culture such as tea ceremony, zazen, and local festivals, not as knowledge but as actual experience. The program features hands-on experience by taking advantage of local resources in a relatively inexpensive way. Volunteers and local specialists make a vital contribution to the program by providing us with invaluable help and support. Each activity is an excellent opportunity for students to meet the locals and communicate in Japanese with them. The questionnaire results show that the students are largely content with the program, appreciating it as an effective means of helping them adjust to the Japanese way of life. Finally the paper discusses challenges for the program, such as respecting students' cultural backgrounds, how to deal with the increasing number of students, the way not to overburden individuals who support us, and how to strike a balance between experience and knowledge. キーワード:文化体験、人的・社会的リソース、交流
