Generally, it is considered that fast waves such as beta and gamma will appear when a mental task is performed. But if it is made smoothly without an obstacle and operation advances automatically, the activation level of the cerebrum and the function of autonomic nervous system will lower, simultaneously. The present study purposes whether the respiratory activity as an index of the autonomic nervous system falls when performing arithmetic tasks. Twenty-four students were assigned mental arithmetic tasks in twice, each for fifteen minutes (first test condition and second test condition) and pauses between and before and after tasks (conditions of warm up, rest, and recovery). For analyses of respiration, we used 6 indices of respiration such as minute ventilation (VE) , tidal volume (TVE), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen consumption (VO_2), and carbon dioxide elimination (VCO_2). The result shows that 4 respiratory indices during mental arithmetic tasks except TVE rise significantly in contrast of pause conditions. The present study suggests that by processing mental tasks smoothly under one's own volition, the activation level of the cerebrum and respiratory function falls. As a considerable cause of activating respiration during mental performance, the experiment per se might bring various stresses (e.g. using of respiratory mask).
