ClassNK has developed the "Guidelines for Direct Strength Analysis," a new practical strength assessment method for primary structural members of tankers, and published these guidelines in November 2001. These guidelines are meant for assessing yield strength, buckling strength and ultimate strength by direct strength calculation, and are a new practical method developed by ClassNK based on the findings of comprehensive research. They are based on the fundamental concepts developed in the "Technical Guide Regarding the Strength Evaluation of Hull Structures," published in 1999. An overview and technical background on the design loads used for strength assessment of primary structural members of tankers as newly developed for the guidelines, is introduced in this report.
