Utilizing now available education data, we estimate an education production function for Japanese students enrolled in the primary and secondary education to find out an existence of the relationships between the outcome of school education represented by the students' achievement and the possible causal factors on the students' achievement such as the individual ability, the quality of the school education, and other pertaining out-of-school factors. The education production function is the application of the economic concept of a production function to the field of education. Although the possible outcomes from any education processes could be multi-faceted, we only focus on the examination scores taken by the students as the most important direct outcome of the school education. The outcome of the estimation implies the positive effects of the teacher quality and the extra study sessions on the students' achievements, while various family and social factors seem to have little, if any, influence.
