In this paper I examine how William Wordsworth's values as described in his Guide can be seen to prefigure ecotourism, which conserves the environment, improves the well-being of local people and promotes tourism. Wordsworth was born and brought up in the Lake District in England, just at the time when it was becoming visited and renowned for its scenic beauty in the late 18th century. He wrote a tour guide to that country, about which many other guides and travelling journals were written at around the same time.While other books were designed to provide the tourists information about how to approach most picturesque scenes, Wordsworth's primary focus was giving the ecological and historical point of view in relation to the landscape so that the new residents as well as the tourists couldappreciate the nature as it is, protect it by traveling on foot in stead of-by couch and train, and come to live 'in the spirit of nature.'
