To evaluate the effects on cardiac function of age and physical training a symptom-limited multistage exercise test was carried out on 153 healthy male subjects. Cardiovascular parameters during exercise were measured using an impedance cardiogram. Exercise duration time and maximal heart rate decreased with an increase of age. The cardiac index decreased with aging at rest, but the response of cardiac index to exercise was smilar in order subjects except for those in their sixties. A comparison between the parameters before and after a year of physical training was made among 50 subjects. Prolongation of exercise duration time and decrease in herat rate, cardiac output and "A dz/dt max." (a parameter of the left atrial contraction) were observed under the same work load at the end of one year of training. The improvement ratio of exercise duration time was higher in subjects whose initial exercise duration time was shorter. Twenty subjects underwent the same exercise test at the end of the third year of the physical training. Though heart rate and A dz/zt max. decreased more as compared to the case with a year of training, cardiac output at each work load did not change any more after3 years of training. Stroke volume at moderate and higher work load incrased after the 3 years. Reduced cardiac output at the given work load reflects the peripheral effect of training, A dz/dt max. and stroke volume express the cardiac function, and appeared rapidly and sustained for three years, whereas the central effect appeared slowly and became manifest at the time of three-years training.
