Picasso's original concept on "Guernica" had been changed in process of its execution. For instance, the bull, one of characters in "Guernica", originally stood for the enemy, but in the final mural, the bull symbolizes the hope of the victims. (Arnheim's interpretation) Picasso's metamorphosis in process of his execution may be important key to understand his art.According to Arnheim, this change of symbolical meaning caused transformation of the composition and the method of representation. However, I think, even if the meaning had been changed, it was after the change of method of representation that each symbolical meaning itself had been changed. Naturally, in the story-telling picture construction, a certain time and place are fixed as premises. In Picasso's case, he was able to express the universality of his ubject by abondonning his original story-telling conception. Picasso abondonned representing a scene as a phenomenon in the natural space, and arranged figures on a plane, each of which was combination of many strong expressive images. Thus, each figure lost the meaning which was given originally as characters in a story and transcended to the absolute and universal phase. Therefore, in the final stage, symbolical meaning of each figure and allegory, which is resulted from relationship of figures, does not have any decisive significance.
