Purification of many compounds produced in bioprocesses has been carried out by a combination of various kinds of separation prosedures. Crystallization is one of these procedures, it, however, should be always applied, when final products are desired to obtainas as solid particles. The crystallization procedure in bioprocesses is mainly solvent crystallization and, for this procedure, the conventional operational design based on the crystallization phenomena in solution is useful. In addition to the above, the crystallization of bioproducts has three characteristics: 1. The products are mainly hydrophobic, and hence, their crystallization from solution (water) very often takes place as reactivecrystallization. 2. In general, the products show crystal polymorphisms. 3. Many products are optically active, and therefore, a optical resolution technique should be required for their purification, In this report, the crystallization operations associated with three characteristics mentioned above have been reviewed.
