Prevention of large-scale brittle fracture inducing hull breakage is extremely important for ensuring ship safety. Although classification societies specify the arrangement of Grade E or EH steel plates as crack arrestors in critical hull structural members such as sheer strakes, deck stringers, and other members, clear arrestability requirements for crack arrestors are not necessarily specified in classification society rules. In this paper, the arrestability requirements for crack arrestors, which are intended for ships under "normal operation" and "emergency situation" such as collision and stranding, are examined based on fracture mechanics (K-concept). In addition, the first-ever "Insert-type Higher Crack Arrestor" is proposed, based on the above examination, which ensures hull structural integrity under "emergency situations". This paper also introduces ClassNK's innovative system for identifying and registering ships with a Descriptive Note, which denotes the application of "Higher Crack Arrestors" to specific hull structural members.
