It is said that the horse power of recent propulsion diesel engines for the same size of hull have been reduced from the former ones. In transient operation condition, such engines with smaller power tend to run to the utmost of their power due to relatively enlarged inertia force. Such being the case, it might be necessary to reconsider current design practice of propulsion shaftings in view of strength. To meet this possible demands, the measurements have been effected to assess the torque acting on actual ship's propulsion shaftings in transient condition. Through the measurements unexpected increases of torsional vibrator torque were observed during ship's crash astern operation. The peak torque increases up to 1.6 times as large as the normal value. In this paper, the measured results are reported together with additional breif studies on the behavior of propulsion diesel engines in transient condition.
