The authors presented "Ship Machinery in the 1990's" and "New Technologies for Coastwise Shipping" in October 1984 at Taipei and in July 1985 at Manila respectively. They reviewed the last decade in terms of technological progress for rather realistic, up-to-date energy saving in ships, particularly in propulsion machinery, including the use of wind energy, and discussed the future prospects of the ship machinery including the shipboard automation; how the engine room should be in the 1990's. The themes dealt with in the above two papers have been thoroughly studied again, and this text provides the summarized outcomes of the studies on ship speed, propulsive efficiency, diesel engines, shaft generators, heat recovery from exhaust gas and sail-rigged ships along with their future prospects.
