This article is an attempt to understand correctly some of the central points-concerning Plato's theory of Ideas and Aristotle's criticism of it, by examining Mr. Tadashi Inoue's view stated in An Interpretation of Aristotle's Metaphysics A 6 (Journal of Classical Studies, vol. V, 1957, pp. 74-86). From his rather peculiar rendering of Metaphysics A 6. 987b 7-10 and, generally, on his interpretation of the term χωριξειν or χωριστοζ, Mr. Inoue concluded that, in Metaphysics, A 6 (to 987b 14) is the only passage in which we have any statement about the genuinely Platonic theory of Ideas. All the other passages where Ideas are mentioned (in particular, 'those who first said that there are Ideas' in M4), according to him, refer not to Plato himself, but, definitely and exclusively, to his followers who misunderstood the philosophy of their master. The present article is intended to show 1) that Mr. Inoue's rendering of A 6. 987b 7-10 is grammatically hardly sustainable, 2) that the alleged difference between the thought referred to in A 6 and that in M 4 is untenable, 3) that Aristotle in A 9, M 4, 5, 9 etc., as well as in A 6 (to 987 b 14), regards Plato as mainly, if not entirely, responsible for the theory there criticized, and 4) that the conception of χωρισμοζ as it is found both in Plato's writings and Aristotle's criticism is incompatible with Mr. Inoue's general supposition.
