In excavation of soil with high ground water level, seepage of water is a problem. Due to shapes of excavation, various flow conditions are encountered: such as two dimensional, two dimensionally concentrated or axisymmetric flows. When the hydraulic head difference between the up-and downstream side is too large, seepage failure occurs in the base of the excavation. In this paper, FEM seepage flow analyses were carried out and the stability against seepage failure of soil was discussed for the various flow conditions. It is concluded that, in the seepage failure problem, the various flow conditions should be specified correctly and the critical hydraulic head difference against seepage failure must be estimated exactly.
