Ten cases of aortic aneurysm, 7 males and 3 females above the age of 50 were studied in the Department of Pathology, Chiba University School of Medicine from 1959 to 1966 and the following results were obtained. In both dissecting and spontaneous true aneurysm of the aorta, the striated ducts (endocrine apparatus) of the parotid glands showed degenerative changes, with corresponding degeneration of the elastic fibers of the media of the aorta. Degeneration of elastic fibers represents the changes common among the ascending, descending and abdominal portions of the aorta. The degeneration of elastic fibers was especially pronounced in the striated ducts of the parotid gland and aorta in dissecting aneurysm. In dissecting aneurysm, atheromatous change of the aorta of a moderate degree was noted, while a marked atheromatous change of the aorta was the rule in spontaneous true aortic aneurysm. In cases of dissecting aneurysm, socalled medionecrosis aortae idiopathica (Erdheim) is considered as one of the factors in addition to the degeneration of elastic fibers of the media of aorta due to the functional disturbance of the salivary gland. Such degeneration of the elastic fibers is seen in spontaneous true aneurysm and probably represents one of the causative factors.
