Steril puncture wounds were made in the rabbit cerebral cortex. The animals were sacrificed at intervals from 24 hours to 7 months. Phagocytic cells, glial cells and myelinated nerve fibers were observed by electron microscopy. Results were as follows : 1. Some of mesodermal cells and of astrocytes showed phagocytic activity. But it was difficult to identify other phagocytic cells by their ultrastructure. 2. Ingested materials showed variety of components, including vesicular or vacuolar elements, lamellar or membranous structure, homogeneous materials and electron dense materials. 3. Phagocytosed myelin retained its structure and was degraded into homogeneous material. 4. Phagocytosed erythrocyte was transformed into hemosiderin granules and ferritin particles. 5. The glial barrier surrounding the older lesion was observed. The barrier consisted of the astrocytes with many cytoplasmic filaments. . Desmosomes were seen between the astrocytic processes. 6. When leptomeningeal cells invaded into the lesion, the basement membrane was observed between the astrocytic processes and the collagen fibrils. Interdigitation and concentric lamination of the astrocytic processes were observed. 7. When the lesion became cavernous,, the basement membrane and interdigitation between the astrocytic processes could not been seen. 8. A small number of myelin sheaths in the neuropil appeared to be disrupted and distended to large empty vacuoles.
