Survey was made clinically of patients with leukemia hospitalized at the 1st Department of Internal medicine of the Hospital of Chiba University Medical School during the period of 33 years from 1926 to 1958. 1. The cases of leukemia admitted to this institution during the period under review totaled 78. Of these cases, the cases of acute myeloid type were the greatest in number, followed by those of chronic myeloid, acute lymphoid, chronic lymphoid, monocytic and other types in order of numbers. 2. With the year 1950 as a dividing line, there were 26 cases (37.3 per cent) during the 24 years up to 1949, while there were 52 cases (66.7 per cent) during the 9 years after 1950. This marked increase in the number of cases in recent years is largely accounted for by the increase of acute cases. 3. There were almost twice as many male patients as female ones. The age distribution of the patients show that they ranged from 14 to 63 and that the patients within the age group 10-20 occupied the first place in number. Though the number of patients tended to decrease with age, the patients within the age group 30-40 were the greatest in number before 1950, and the patients within the age group 10-20 after 1950. 4. Clinical symptoms were more severe in acute cases than in chronic ones. The former showed a stronger tendency to anemia, lesions in the oral cavity, pyrexia and hemorrhage. In some of them, the liver, spleen and lymphatic glands were unpalpable. Signs of disturbance of the nervous system were not rare in all types. 5. Investigation on blood picture showed the following fluctuations in the number of three types of corpuscles to be found in the olood : there was a diminution of the red blood cells in many of the acute cases, but the numbers of the white blood cells and blood platelets in them were indefinite ; few of the chronic cases showed a marked diminution of the three corpuscles ; the acute cases had a higher incidence of the occurrence of immature cytes, and the leukemic cells found in them, which seemed to have turned into the tumor cells, defied classification. 6. Recent advances in treatment caused clinical and hematologic remission to occur in some of the patients under survey. However, the effect of combined use of drugs, the acquisition of resistance to drugs, and the treatment of hemorrhage, merit further clinical investigation.
