Clinical studies were carried out in 12 pregnant women with ancylostomiasis during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium. The newborn were also examined. The observations made suggested that the patients whose hemoglobin contents was less than 7.5 g/dl should be classified as severe cases and those whose values were more than that as mild cases. The severe cases, 7 in all, were intense anemia and had marked edema; 5 had proteinuria and several cases had symptoms resembling the symptoms of respiratory and circulatory disorders, morning sickness and beriberi, as well as the symptoms of toxemia of pregnancy, and 2 had pulmonary edema. In delivery, such abnormalities as green turbid amniotic fluids, white infarct in the placenta, and a decrease in the weight of placenta were manidested by many cases. All the newborn weighed less than normal, and some were in asphyxia, and 2 had the neonatal deaths. The mild cases, though, anemic, had mild symptoms. Their delivery and the puerperium were undventful, and the weight of the newborn was normal. Pregnant women being hospitalized, undergoing physical examination were examined for hookworm infection. Hemoglobin contents was determined in them, and the birth weight of newborn infants was measured. Results of mothers positive for hookworm eggs and mothers negative for them were compared with each other. It was shown that hemoglobin contents was lower and the newborn weighed less in the former than in the latter. Pregnant women in 5 communities were grouped into those positive for hookworm eggs and those negative for them based on the result of stool tests conductes by 4 health centers, and birth weight of the newborn was compared from group to group. The result clearly showed that newborn infants of the former weighed less than those of the latter, and many premature infants were born of the former.
