With the rapid progress and rationalization of the modern industry, an attempt has in recent years been made to study the onset and course of pulmonary tuberculosis from the point of view of industrial medicine by analyzing complicated conditions and evaluating various factors involved in its development, so that a better plan for the control of pulmonary tuberculosis among factory workers may be evolved. Along this line of study, the author carried out a study of 203 workers at an iron mill in Chiba City who, having pulmonary tuberculosis, had been followed for 2 to 6 years. Having pulmonary tuberculosis of type 4-7 (Oka's classification), they were divided into several groups according to the following criteria and were examined for various details: the type of disease, caloric requirement of work, degree of exposure to dust and high temperature, whether hospitalized, given chemotherapy with out hospitalization, or received no treatment at all, status in the company, and age. It was revealed that the patients engaged in heavy work had favorable prognosis, that working at high temperature had a noxious influence on infiltrative lesions, that chemotherapy, rather than decrease of work volume, and hospitalization, rather than chemotherapy while at work, had more effect on tuberculosis, and that infiltrative lesions in youth had a good chance of recovery.
