Clinical studies were carried out in 49 subjects, both normal and suffering from kidney diseases and essential hypertension, to evaluate PSP clearance and to determine the position occupied by it among various kidney function tests. Studies were also made to find out what precautions should be taken in performing the test. The following observations were made: 1. It is necessary that PSP clearance should be performed under the following conditions: plasma concentration must be from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/dl and secretion of the urine over 1.0 cc/min in volume. 2. An average normal value of CPSP was 310.3 cc/min by single injection method, while it was 361.1 cc/min by standard method. An average normal CPSP/CPAH ratio was 0.657, while an average normal CPSP/C_<Thio> ratio was 3.45. 3. In morbid kidneys, there was a high degree of correlation between the values of CPSP and CPAH, the correlation coefficient being 0.94. It was shown that CPSP was a sensitive guide to effective renal plasma flow, having a high degree of correlation with PSP test, and being dependable. 4. As a method of kidney function test, PSP clearance was as significant as PAH clearance.
