The production of "green fluorescent pigment" is one of essential criteria in the classification of Pseudomonas. Nevertheless a large member of the genus Pseudomonas is described to be "non-pigmented" group. It is doubtful whether the members of the "non-pigmented" Pseudomonas do not produce any soluble fluorescent pigment at all. Present investigation was carried out along this line in some detail. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. When 11 strains of non-pigmented fresh water forms and 7 straiens of marine forms including Takigawa strain of Pseudomonas were shaken-cultured in a synthetic medium, containing asparagine and glycerol, all strains produced yellowish pigments within 3-14 days' culture period. Fresh water forms showed greenish blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light, while marine forms showed pale purple. 2. As revealed by pH fluorescence curves, these pigments fluoresced weakly in acidic and strongly in alkaline solutions. Accordingly, it was thus shown that these pigments are chemically different from the pigment produced by Ps. fluorescens. 3. As for the fluorescence spectra, the pigments produced by these test organisms showed maxima in the range of 460-470 mμ, while the pigments obtained from marine form of Pseudomonas showed at 435 mμ. 4. From these results it was clearly demonstrated that both "non-pigmented" fresh water forms and marine forms of Pseudomonas have a potential ability to produce fluorescent pigments, which are definitely different each other.
