Measurement was made of magnesium content of normal mature placentae, immature placentae and morbid placentae by the incineration method and Yanagisawa's method, using 186 fresh human placentae containing the which were separated from the uteri following delivery or forced abortion during a period from July, 1958 to September, 1959. In normal mature placentae, magnesium content was 8.88±0.51 mg %. In immature placentae, higher values were found with an advance in the month of pregnancy: it was 4.48±0.46 mg % in the second month, and 7.39±0.60 mg % in the ninth month. Stochastically, magnesium content of the placentae from patients with toxemia of pregnancy of early stage tended to be less than normal, while that of the placentae from patients with toxemia of pregnancy of late stage was definitely less than normal. This indicates that magnesium content of the morbid placentae diminishes in direct proportion to exacerbation of a disease. It has been stated that magnesium plays an important part in the metabolism of a living body, that electrolyte balance is more specific in pregnancy than in non-pregnancy, and that it becomes more so in toxemia of pregnancy. The results of the present studies show that magnesium, an electrolyte, is concerned in the metabolism of the placenta.
