The following studies were performed following Dr. Ichikawa's study. 1) Histologic studies As for the 43 cases-of accidental death, the diameter of the germinal center of the lymphfollicle was measured (Fig. 1, Tab. 4), followed by comparing it with that measured in the cases of the hyperplasia (Tab. 5). The data led us, Dr. Ichikawa and me, to the following definition of what is called "The Lymphfollicle Hyperplasia of the Terminal Ileum". That is, "the lymphfollicle vegetates physiologically between the ages of 14 and 24. Consequently the lymphfollicle hyperplasia is defined as those cases which show hyperplasia above this upper normal limits plus with some clinical symptoms" (Fig. 5). 2) Radiologic studies The lymphfollicle hyperplasia of the terminal ileum visualizes on a film the so-called "Cobble stone ileum" (named by Dr. Golden). This finding, however, is obtained only in the case of hyperplasia of higher grade. Therefore in cases of slight or moderate hyperplasia, the diagnosis cannot be established without careful examination of Reyer's patches. As far as I am concerned, I examined the indirect symptoms first, followed by further examinations of Reyer's patches. A) Indirect or functional symptoms Irritation and functional deformity of the cecum were observed in about 20-30% (Fig.11, 13). The swollen lymphnodes of the ileocecal angle can be discovered with the wider interpretation of the incrussation of Bauhin's valve on the side of the examiner (Fig. 14, 15, 17, 19). B) Reyer's patches are aggregated densely within 10cm from Bauhin's valve (Fig. 8). Therefore careful examination of this area is indispensable for the evaluation of Reyer's patches. Reyer's patches may appear on one side or both sides of the terminal ileum (Fig. 28), and may be enlarged by twice in X-ray examination with compression method (Fig. 29).
