Experiments were carried out in germ-free guinea pigs to study the influence of several species of non-pathogenic microorganisms, given singly or together, on the structure of the mucous membrane of the intestinal canal. The following observations were made: 1. The lamina propria (the subepithelial connective tissue) of the intestinal mucous membrane was less developed, and there was a small number of the wandering cells in germ-free guinea pigs than in the guinea pigs, either raised in a normal environment or fed on an autoclaved diet, which served as the control. 2. Administration of a strain of aerobic spore bearing bacterium (unidentified) to germ-free guinea pigs resulted in facilitation of development of the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa and an increase in the number of the wandering cells; and their histologie picture came to resemble that of the conventional animals. 3. When a strain of Lactobacillus was administered to germ-free guinea pigs, they showed slightly better development of the lamina propria than germ-free guinea pigs. Improvements in structural development of the intestinal mucous membrane were not, however, so marked as in guinea pigs to which a strains of the spore bearing bacterium was given. 4. The two groups of germ-free guinea pigs, to which a combination of a large number of a strain of Escherichia coli (Ml) and a small number of another strain of Escherichia coli (F6) and a combination of a large number of the strain of Escherichia coli (Ml) and a small number of Streptococcus faecalis were respectively given, died a few days after administration. Histologie sections showed hyperemia and cell infiltration in the intestinal mucous membrane. There was no appreciable difference in development of the lamina propria between these two groups of guinea pigs on the one hand and germ-free guinea pigs, which served as the control, on the other. 5. In the two groups of guinea pigs to which a combination of a large number of the strain of Escherichia coli (F6) and a small ^number of the strain of Escherichia coli (Ml) and a combination of a large number of Streptococcus faecalis arid a small number of the strain of Escherichia coli (M1) were respectively given, development of the lamina propria was better than in germ-free guinea pigs. 6. Of the germ-free guinea pigs to which the strain of Escherichia coli (M1) and the strain of Lactobacillus were given together, one in which the Escherichia coli was predominant, died of necrotic hemorrhagic .enteritis, while others in which the Lactobacillus was predominant, showed sound growth. The latter showed normal development of the lamina propria of the intestinal mucous membrane.
