From September through December, 1956, stool examinations for hookworm eggs, identification of the species of hookworms, and investigation of the ways of living of families were carried out at Hasama and Sunosaki of Tateyama City, half fishing and half agricultural communities (where males chiefly engage themselves in fishing and females in agriculture), to study the epidemiological aspect of hookworm infestation. 1. Children and youths had a low prevalence of positivity for hookworm eggs, while adults had a high prevalence; among adults the prevalence was higher in females than in males, and there was a significant difference between them. 2. When inhabitants were divided into occupational groups, those who are engaged in agriculture had a high prevalence of positivity for hookworm eggs, while those who are engaged in fishing had a low prevalence. 3. Two kinds of parasite hookworms were found: Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale. While female adults, especially those who are engaged in agriculture, had a high prevalence of infestation with N. americanus, the eggs of this species were not detected in the stools from male adults (engaged in fishing), infants and children. On the other hand, the eggs of A. duodenale were fund in the stools from all groups of inhabitants-groups divided by sex, age, occupation and type of works. 4. There was no known relation between the prevalence of hookworm infestation and accumulation of hookworms in a family. However, the families, in which there were more than two hookworm egg carriers, showed a tendency to accumulation of A. duodenale in them. 5. Those who had ground itch before proved to be infested with N. americanus. They were all females engaged in agriculture. 6. The result of the present study seems to indicate that the larvae of N. americanus gain entrance into the body mainly by way of the skin, when it happens to come into contact with contaminated earth, while those of A. duodenale enter the body with contaminated food, regardless of whether or not there have been contacts with contaminated earth.
