The author performed statistical observation of the results of Volhard's water excretion test and phenolsulfonephthalein test made in 123 normal individuals and 254 patients with various diseases of the urinary tract. (1) When the volume of water excreted (or the output of phenolsulfonephthalein) y is plotted against the time x, the curves obtained are expressed as follows: y=a(1-e^<-bx^2>)…Water excretion test. y=a(1-e^<-bx>)…Phenolsulfonephthalein test. These formulas represent different mechanisms of excretion. The differential calculus of these formulas shows the quantities of water and phenolsulfonephthalein excreted at a unit hour; in normal individuals, the volume of water excreted reached the maximum of 390.6 cc. per hour in 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the per cent of dye excretion showed the maximum value of 38.1 % per hour immediately after injection, gradually decreasing thereafter. (2) In patients with renal impairment, especially those with tuberculosis of one kidney and hypertrophy of the prostate, an average volume of water excreted at each hour was significantly lower than that in normal individuals. In view of these observations, the author considers it more logical to estimate the renal function on the basis of the total volume of water excreted at the third hour, rather than on the basis of the total water excretion at the fourth hour which has generally been believed to supply the standard best suited for estimation of renal function. (3) The author is in favor of a view that in phenolsulfonephthalein test for renal function the most reliable result could be achieved if the per cent of dye excretion obtained 30 minutes after injection were used as a standard for estimation. (4) The existence of correlation between the result of water excretion test and that of phenolsulfonephthalein test was demonstrated in patients with tuberculosis of one kidney, whereas in normal individuals there was no correlation between the results of the two tests (r=0). The result of water excretion test did not parallel that of phenolsulfonephthalein test in many of the normal individuals, while in patients with tuberculosis of one kidney the former paralleled the latter. When expressed with probability ellipsis, the range of values for phenolsulfonephthalein test and water excretion test in normal individuals did not agree with that in patients with tubes culosis of one kidney.
