An attempt has been made to perform observations on numerical changes in the intestinal flora in pigeons which had been fed on a diet consisting of white rice. The following four species of organisms detected in 1 g of feces were incubated on selective culture media, and their numbers were counted by the most probable number method (a modification of Homma, Tado and Yoshie): 1. Escherichia coli (cultured on E. C. broth medium) 2. E. coli var Communior (cultured of E. C. broth medium in which lactose has been replaced by sucrose) 3. Enterococcus (cultured on azide dextrose broth medium) 4. Lactobacillus acidophilus (cultured on Homma's medium) The experiments were performed in two seasons: the dry season (October to January) and the wet one (May to July). The results are summarized as follows: 1. There was no marked difference in the results between the two seasons. 2. All the pigeons fed on white rice developed the condition usually associated with the diet consisting of white, rice, and they died when they had lost 20 % of body weight. 3. When pigeons were in good health, the number of organisms of E. coli which was 10^6 was more or less similar to that of the organisms of Enterococcus. It was almost impossible to detect the organisms of E. coli var communior; when they could be found, their number was usually less than 10^4. 4. As the disease developed, the numbers of the organisms of E. coli and E. coli var communior rapidly increased; when the condition had aggravated, they were 10^6 and 10^8, respectively, and the total number of the organisms of two species was equivalent to three times the number of the organisms of Enterococcus which, showing a decrease at the onset of the disease, rapidly increased just before the death and reached 10^8. 5. When pigeons were in good health, the number of the organisms of L. acidophilus was about 10^7 and showed no appreciable change with the development of the disease. In view of the fact that the organisms of all the species tested showed increases in numbers just before death, this observation may be taken to mean that the number of the organisms of L. acidophilus relatively increased with. the development of the disease. 6. The above observation would indicate that the numbers of the various species of organisms become unbalanced with the development of the disease caused by a diet consisting exclusively of white rice, and that a decrease in the number of organisms of Enterococcus indicates ill health. A rapid increase in the number of organisms of E. coli var communior at the last stage of the disease are especially worthy of note. 7. The gram-positive organisms of Diplococcus the section of whose colony was semi-circular or convex in shape were found in anaerobic culture media. According to Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, they resemble the organisms of Diplococcus plagarum-belli.
