During his research on intestinal bacterial flora, Dr. Miyairi had succeeded in isolating a specie of spore bearing organisms which showed marked inhibitory action against putrefactive organisms. Miyarisan, a preparation of this specie of spore bearing organisms, has since been introduced and used in the treatment of intestinal ailments with great effect. So long as it exerts favorable influence on living bodies by inhibiting the growth of pathogenic organisms and preventing fermentation and putrefaction in the intestines, there is no doubt but that it would not only contribute to the maintenance of health but would also have favorable influence on the development and growth of animals. For the purpose of investigating into the mechanism of the effect of Miyarisan on the grwoth of animals, the author conducted experiments on its oral administration to chicks and correlated its effect with the variations in the numbers of intestinal bacteria. The results of the experiments are summarized as follows: (1) There was correlation between the rate of increase of the body weight of a chick and the rates at which coli-aerogenes group and enterococci were found in the feces; the growth of a chick was checked when the number of coli-aerogenes group was larger than that of enterococci, while it was promoted when the number of enterococci was large' than that of coli-aerogenes group. (2) Chicks given Miyarisan equiva lent in amount to 1 % of the diet began to show marked increases in body weight in 4 to 5 weeks after the administration had begun, keeping pace with increases in the numbers of enterococci found in the, feces; 7 weeks after the administration had begun, they showed an increase on an average of 8.75 % as compared with control chicks. (3) Chicks administered Miyarisan equivalent in amount to 0.2 % of the diet showed an increase in body weight of 8.6 % 6 weeks after the administration had begun as compared with control chicks, while those administered Miyarisan equivalent in amount to 0.5 % of the diet showed an increase of 5.8 %. (4) Chicks administered Miyarisan equivalent in amount to 5 % of the died showed sudden increases in body weight a week after the administration had begun, which corresponded to decreases in the numbers of coli-aerogenes group found in the feces. In 2, to 3 weeks, however, the numbers of coli-aerogenes group increased again and reached a point where they were either equal to, or larger than, those of enterococci. Keeping abreast of this tendency, increases in body weight also fell off. (5) Chicks administered Miyarisan with higher Cl. butyricum content in amount equal to 1 % of the diet began to show. decreases in the numbers of coli-aerogenes group found in the feces, as well as increases in body weight, about a week after the administration had begun; increases in body weight became marked side by side with increases in the numbers of enterococci found in the feces in about 4 to 5 weeks; and in 7 weeks, they showed an increase on an average. of 21.7 % over control animals. The chicks used as controls lacked uniformity in growth; some of them grew up satisfactorily, while others showed under-development. On the other hand, full growth characterized the chicks given Miyarisan and not a single under-developed chick was found. It seems that, while the administrattion of Miyarisan to chicks full of vitality would be meaningless, it would be effective in promoting the growth of chicks which are born weak. That the administration of Miyarisan equivalent in amount to 5 % of diet did not produce favorable results might be due to the toxic action of CaCO_3 accumulated in the bodies (70 % of the preparation, is CaCO_3) which destroys the balance maintained among various intestinal organisms. In view of the fact that the administration of proper amounts of Miyarisan resulted in decreases in the numbers of coliaerogenes group and increases in the numbers of enterococci, it would seem that this phenomenon accounts for the increases in body weight.
