The author measured the amount of ketone bodies in the urine in 17 normal children as well as the amount of ketone bodies in the blood in 32 normal children and 6 newlyborn babies by means of Krainick's colorimetric method. The author also measured the amount of ketone bodies in the urine, total lipids in the serum, blood water level and the rate of absorption of lipids, and examined hepatic function and the variation in the rate of absorption and the amount of ketone bodies excreted in the urine attributable to the difference in the nature of lipids in 17 normal children after feeding them ketogenic diet containing fat and other substances in the ratio 2.5:1. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The amount of ketone bodies in the blood in normal children was 1.50≧m≧0.96mg. /dl., showing no difference between the male and the female. In newly-born babies, it was 7.76mg./dl., which was far higher than that in the above group. The amount of ketone bodies excreted in the urine in children over 4 months old was 19.01≧m≧15.41mg./24 hours. It was very minute in babies less than 3 months old. 2. The amount of ketone bodies excreted in the urine in children given ketogenic diet was very minute in babies less than 3 months old. lt, however, tended to increase with age until it showed a maximum value in children between the ages 2-9. In children over 9 years of age, it tended to decrease, but was still larger than in babies. No evidence of the disturbance in hepatic function was found. 3. After ketogenic diet was given, all the children showed an increase in total lipids in the serum. The increase, however, was not parallel to that in the amount of ketone bodies excreted in the urine. Blood water level showed a decrease, but it was not parallel to a decrease in the amount of ketone bodies excreted in the urine. 4. The rate of absorption of lipids in children given ketogenic diet was good; it was, in fact, higher than that in children given normal diet. It showed no variation due to a difference in age. The test in which the rate of absorption of butter was compared with that of soy bean oil has shown that there are no appreciable differences between the two lipids.
