The author carried out estimation of the levels of antidiuretic substances (ADS) in the serum by Birnie Method in 5 cases of normal children, 5 cases of ekiri, 6 cases of dysentery, 6 cases of various diseases causing oliguria and 3 cases of diseases causing polyuria. At the same, the author measured the specific gravity of the urine in 10 cases of ekiri and 7 cases of dysentery. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The average value of ADS in the serum for normal children was 67.4, which more or less corresponded to the average value for normal adults in Japan. (2) The average values of ADS in the serum were; 45.8 for ekiri patients; 52.8 for dysentery patients; and 43.5 for the patients of oliguria. The differences between each of these values and the average, value for normal children were significant from the statistical point of view, with the activity of ADS in the serum being larger in the former three groups of patients than in the latter normal group. However, there existed no significant difference between the values of each group of cases. There also existed no signification difference between the average value of ADS in the serum for normal children and that for the patients of polyuria, which was 78.3. (3) The average value of the specific gravity of the urine for ekiri patients was 1.0203, while that for dysentery patients was 1.0247. Although the former showed a tendency to be lower than the normal level, there existed no difference of significance between the two. (4) In view of the fact that the symptoms of oliguria of high degree or of anuria in ekiri were rather moderate as compared to the marked decrease in the renal blood flow despite an increase in the ADS in the serum, and that the tubular reabsorption rate of water and the specific gravity of the urine showed a lowering in the water maintaining capacity of the renal tubules in . ekiri patients, it is inferred that oliguria or anuria in ekiri patients can be attributed to hemodynamic factors arising from the contraction of blood vessels of the kidneys resulting from the dominance of the sympathetic nervous system over the general functioning of the body organs, rather than to the humoral factors ascribable to the action of ADS in the serum.
