The author conducted experiments on the power of anaerobes to destroy Ascaris eggs and carried out microchemical investigations into the mechanism of such power. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Of the 40 strains of obligatory anaerobes isolated from different kinds of soils and muds, 6 strains were proved to have the power to kill Ascaris eggs. Morphological and biological studies of the above-mentioned strains that are endowed with the power to destroy the eggs of Ascaris have disclosed that the microbe Clostridium angulosum has the strongest power of all the species. This species was used exclusively in further investigations on the mechanism of the power of anaerobes to kill Ascaris eggs. 3) On fractionation of fatty acid produced as a result of the culture of this species of microorganisms in glucose-potato-bouillon culture mediums, the presence of capric acid was confirmed. This acid exhibited the action to kill Ascaris eggs even when it was diluted 3200 times. 4) The extract of protein decomposing enzyme fraction formed by this species of organisms demonstrated the power to inhibit the growth of Ascaris eggs even though it was diluted 400 times. It had, however, scarcely any power to destroy them. 5) In view of the above-mentioned results, it is conceivable that fatty acid fraction, especially capric acid contained in it, would mainly be responsible for the power of anaerobes to destroy Ascaris eggs, and that protein decomposing, enzyme would complement its action.
