As the nasal mucous membrane is made fibrous in the case of atrophic rhinitis, which has 3 cardinal symptoms, crust, stink, and atrophy, it is not enough simply to narrow the nasal cayity in the operation from the physiological point of view. The operation for atrophic rhinitis, maxillo-turbinal method, so called M. KUBO's operation, was originated by Prof. M. KUBO himself in 1930. Since then he has operated numerous cases and obtained good results. The author examined 41 cases for 16 years(1937-1952) to observe the increase and decrease of subjective symptoms after the operation. The operation had an effect on headache in 78 %, on stink in 77 %, on dry feeling of nasal cavity in 58 %, on nasal discharge in 58 %, on stuffiness in 56 %, on impediment to olfactory sensation in 51 %: In all, this method was observed to be effective in 83 % of all cases. None of them showed the increase of subjective symptoms after operations. The result of the. operation was not influenced by the degree of the atrophy in the nasal cavity. The author came to a conclusion that the condition of the mucous membrane in the maxillary sinus influenced very much on the effect of the operation, and that the effect was the greatest in the case of the primary type of atrophic rhinitis, which had sinuitis in it.
