In order to clarify relations between aggravation in the general condition of patients and the change in the bacterial contents of the intestinal canal, an investigation on tubercular patients belonging to far advanced cases was conducted. The stools of 18 patients in cachectic condition which and not been treated with antibiotics were examined in both aerobic and anaerobic cultures in order to study the percentages of various bacterial species detected in tnem. The experiments were performed three time at intervals of about one week and the average percentage composition of the intestinal bacteria detected at each experiment was assumed to be the percentage composition of each patient under investigation. Further, the percentages of various bacterial species for a whole group of patients were determined by taking the average of the values for 18 patients. Similar experiments were perfomed on 8 normal adults as the control. The results of the experiments are summarized as follows: 1) For the patients' group, pH of the stool was found at 6.67, while it was found at 6.72 for the control group, with the former showing a tendency to be slightly acid. 2) The percentage composition for the patients' group was as follows: coli group, 53.1 %; enterococcus, 45.1 %; Iactobacillus acidophilous, 0.2 %; staphylococcus, 0.8 %; and bacillus subtilis, 0.8 %. The percentage composition for the control group was coli group, 52.2 % ; enterococcus, 45.4%; lactobacillus acidophilous, 0.6 %; staphylococcus, 0.9 %; and bacillus subtilis 0.9 %. Thus, no difference of significance was observed between the two groups. 3) The percentages of obligate anaerobic bacteria and facultative anaerobic bacteria detected in the anaerobic culture were : 54.1 % and 45.9 %, respectively, for the patients' group; and 50.5 %, and 49.9 %, respectively, for the control group. The differences between the two groups were slight. In 5 cases of, intestinal tuberculosis, however, obligate anaerobic bacteria represented 4.4 %, 19.5 %, 21.9 %, 22.5 % and 22.5 %, showing marked decrease. 4) Only 6 cases out of the patients' group of 18 and 2 cases out of the control group of 8 demonstrated more or less constant values in the percentages of various bacterial species throughout the three experiments. In other cases, there were fluctuations in values each time the experiments were performed. The results of the investigation have led the author to conclude that the change in the bacterial contents of the intestinal canal depends mainly on the diet and the function of the intestine, and would not be influenced much by the general condition of patients.
