It has been recognized pathologically that fatty degeneration of high degree develops in the liver in "Ekiri." On the other hand, biochemical researches have revealed the fact that the amount of fat in the blood increases in "Ekiri." The author undertook investigation of the quantitative variations of blood choline which acts as stimulant of the parasympathetic nervous system and at the same 'time plays an important role as lipotrophic factor in the metabolism of bodily fat. Majority of the blood choline levels measured in 8 cases of dysentery ranged from 0.13 mg/dl to 0.16 mg/dl and were within normal range (0.1-0.25 mg/dl). The blood choline levels measured in 10 cases of "Ekiri" ranged from 0.04 mg/dl to 0.6 mg/dl, with the average of 0.05 mg/dl. This shows marked lowering, representing reduction of more than 50 % of the amounts in normal and dysentery cases. The fact that blood choline levels are lowered in "Ekiri" will serve to account for the fatty degeneration of the liver and kidneys, lipemia, paralysis of the intestinal duct and an enormous increase in pulse rates without corresponding rise in temperature.
