Various chemical tests to detect the enterotoxin have been investigated, however, they are not regarded as satisfactory for such purposes. Therefore, in order to resolve the difficult problem, instead of these methods the serological ones were studied. The present paper deals with precipitation tests of the enterotoxin. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The antigen used in this experiment are Icrude toxic culture filtrates and purified fractions which were prepared by salting out, acid precipitation at pH 3.3, Hyflosupercel chromatography, and zone-electrophoresis. 2). Rabbits were immunized intra-venously five times in the intervals of a week and on the seventh day after last injection sera were obtained. 3) The enterotoxic culture filtrates and purified samples were tested on these sera by precipitation procedure, and it was found that all enterotoxic samples showed positive reactions for sera which were obtained from animals immunized by purified enterotoxin, and non-enterotoxic samples gave negative results. 4) Applying the quantitative immunochemical Iagar-gel diffusion technique, the purified enterotoxic sample showed only one precipitation band. This phenomenon suggests that the number of antigenic substance in the extract lmight be only one. 5) In the serological examinations for culture filtrates of many enterotoxigen strains which were isolated from food materials, positive reactions could be seen in all tests. From these experimental results, it is concluded that the serological examination technique might be only one useful method detecting enterotoxin.
