The president of Beijing Imperial Astronomical Bureau, baron Hallerstein, was a Japanese Jesuit Provincial and Visitor for several decades. He never put his foot on Japanese soil, but he was always ready to learn as much about Japan as he could. Without visiting the Land of Rising Sun he gathered some relevant information about Japanese. Slovenian Hallerstein got some basic knowledge about Japan from the European books before he sailed for the Far East. In Beijing, the Koreans were his principal informers about Japan. Besides the Japanese religious circumstances, which were Hallerstein's official concern, he was mostly interested in the Japanese sciences, especially astronomy. The Beijing astronomer Hallerstein published more observations in Europe than any of his predecessors. The European scientists inquisitively expected his results because he used the best available European astronomical equipments.
