The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), the remake of the famous French classic Plein Soleil (1960) starring Alain Delon, is more overtly homosexual than the original. It seems to be a story of a feminized man, Ripley, who wants to get male identity. He desperately longs to identify with a rich young man, Dickey, who is leading a decadent life in Italia. His desire is expressed in various sequences in which male nudities are effectively represented as a symbol of masculinity. The story supports the theory that the homosexual men are attracted by men for their lack of confidence of being male which has been caused by absence of the father figure in the present society.
