Throughout its century-long history, research on Japanese honorifics has been largely based on the notion of 'respect'. From the anthropological or sociological viewpoint, however, honorifics should be seen as typical devices to express relative 'distance' between participants, and Brown & Levinson put this view at the core of their theory of 'politeness'. In this paper, I argue that the axes of 'power' and 'solidarity' of Japanese honorifics can be unified on one single scale of 'distance', and suggest a formulation based on 'point of view' and 'distance' in order to account for their pragmatic, as well as normative, usages.
