• Since S. Freud, the female phallus has been deemed as fixation and a consequence of unresolved penis envy, and thus a significant factor obstructing the maturation of femininity. As an exception, Jacobson (1937) clarified the developmental significance of internalization and integration of the female phallus into femininity by conceptualizations such as 'inner penis'. However, discussion on phallus integration seems to be limited after her contribution. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to make clear the conditions for phallus integration in female personality structure, making distinction between the defensive phallus (the so-called "penis envy") and the integrated phallus, which is a key factor for the developmental task of egoidentity. In this study, the integrated phallus was conceptualized as the "position of phallic energy", which was distinguished from the "position of phallic narcissistic defense". In the experimental case studies, these two positions were clearly confirmed. That is, it was observed that the "position of phallic energy", which was conceptualized as the developmental key, was related to the confrontation of the Oedipus complex, which is the main developmental task for adolescents. Furthermore, a latitudinal study was conducted with the purpose of confirming these two positions are developmental concepts that can be aligned on a continuum, and to identify and examine the mechanisms that would lead to the developmental shift between the two positions.
